Show NEW CONCRETE DITCHER IN USE I Since February of this year members of the West Enoch Irrigation Ir-rigation Company have been thinking about concrete ditches in the Enoch area for the purpose pur-pose of conservation of water. Since that time members of the company have looked at .a number of commercial' concrete ditchers but haven't quite seen what they wanted. It was at this point the Henry Grimshaw, a principal member of the organization, organi-zation, started to work In his own machine shop on hisarm. Mr. Grimshaw designed and built a concrete ditcher and Monday, Memorial Day, the outfit out-fit was put into operation in the beginning of 6300 feet of concrete con-crete ditching, and the Irrigation company is more than pleased with the outcome. Laid This Week Of the 6300 feet of ditching that was laid early this week 3300 feet is ditch 14 Inches deep and 3000 feet is ditch 10 Inches deep. One load of ready mix concrete con-crete was timed and it was found that the five yards of concrete made a ditch 130 feet long and the process was completed in two and one-half minutes. The big gest problem that the company has is keeping in concrete. It would take at least six'yard ready mix trucks to keep the outfit out-fit going. Two Ferguson tractors, one in front and one in back are used to control the depth of the ditch and the angle or tilt of the ditch, if it Is desired. These controls are hydraulic and that Is the only purpose of the two tractors. It is a rather simple matter to move the all-steel ditcher and concrete bucket. The two tractors lift the outfit out of the ground with hydraulic lifts and move It from place to place. The depth of the ditch is easily controlled also. With the combining of the ditcher ditch-er and concrete layer as one unit the ditcher and the concrete are automatically adjusted to the same proportion. Pulled by Crawler Motivating force for the ditcher ditch-er and concrete, boat Is an International In-ternational crawler. It leads the two tractors and pulls the outfit along its course. Another advantage that the combination ditcher and concrete boat offers Is the fact that the ditch is not made until just sec- ouds before the concrete is poured. pour-ed. This leaves moisture in the ditch, allows the ditch to be uniform uni-form and also the moisture retained re-tained by this method assures a more secure adherence of the concrete to the banks. Also the concrete bucket is not allowed to shift from side to side in the ditch. This assures that the walls of the concrete ditch are uniform regardless of a possible pos-sible weave in the ditch. The concrete bucket, as a unit of the ditcher, follows exactly in the center. Assistance Rendered Technical assistance for the project was provided by the Iron County Soil Conservation District. Dis-trict. The outlt was used for the first time on Memorial Day and Henry Hen-ry admits that he wasn't sure until un-til that time that everything would work Just right. It was the first undertaking of the apparatus, ap-paratus, but undoubtedly will not be the last. He plans to. contract con-tract the outfit in other areas of the Cedar valley and wherever the call comes for the use of this equipment. |
