Registration for the annual State Convention of Lions Clubs began this morning with the vanguard of an expect-. ed 1200 Lions and their partners expected to participate in the three-day affair, which officially opens tonight, Thursday, and continues through Saturday night. Advance registration for the annual event, together with indications indica-tions from members of clubs in this area that they would drive in daily to relieve the housing hous-ing situation, points to the highest high-est attendance in the history of the organization. Convention committees, headed head-ed by Reed Berrett for the Lions and Mrs. L. A. Whetten for the Lady Lions, closely assisted by Ray Lindquist and Mrs. Dee G. Cowan, club presidents, have outlined out-lined a program of activities that should prove highly educational education-al and entertaining. Entertainment Entertain-ment features for both men and women will be many and varied, but will not detract in any way from important business sessions during the three days. The convention officially opens at 5:00 p. m. today, with a pre-convention pre-convention mixer at Hotel El Escalante Es-calante lawns, to be followed by a Cedar City host night at the College of Southern Utah auditorium auditor-ium later In the evening. Climaxing Climax-ing the first day'3 activities will be a get-acquainted dance at the C S U ballroom. The first business session will be held Friday forenoon, with committee reports and other business bus-iness of the state organization, and at which Lions International guest speaker, Dr. Ramiro Col-lazzo Col-lazzo of Cuba, will make his first appearance. Dr. Collazzo, past president, Lions International, will be Introduced by D. A. Skeen, Salt Lake City, another past president, and perhaps the most prominent member of the Utah organization. -- i DR. RAMIRO COLLAZZO portant subject of water for Utah with the delegates gathered here from all parts of the state. Following the business session Friday afternoon, the evening hours will be filled with unusual entertainment. At 5:00 p. m. the delegates will pause to pay tribute to departed club members who have passed on during the past year. These necrology services will be staged by the St. George Lions Club in the beautiful new auditorium at the College of Southern Utah. With this solemn event past the Lions and their ladies will Journey to the CSU football stadium sta-dium where a pit beef barbecue will be served. Members of the local club have been working for the past several weeks, building barbecue pits and completing arrangements ar-rangements that should make this feature a highlight of the convention. Followlnf the barbecue the Lions and Lady Lions will return re-turn to the college auditorium for the annual quartet contest and for a special entertainment feature, fea-ture, "Dixieland Show Time" to be presented by the Cedar City Club. The Lions and Ladies will separate sep-arate on Saturday morning for day-long activities, the ladles leaving for an excursion to Zion National Park, and the Lions par-ticlpating par-ticlpating first In the annual Key Members breakfast, and then swinging Into a long list of busl-ness busl-ness activities, Including the an-nual an-nual election of officers and the selection of the 1956 convention city. The Presidents and Secretaries luncheon will be held at El Es. " calante hotel at noon Saturday, after which the afternoon hours will be devoted to optional scenic tours arranged by the host club. The women folk will be taken on an excursion through Zlon canyon and will be served brunch at the Utah Parks lodge, and return re-turn to Cedar City during the afternoon af-ternoon to join their husbands for the evening activities. Climax of the entire convention conven-tion will be the Governor's Ban-quet Ban-quet to be served at the CSU fieldhouse at 7:30 p. m., and the Governors Ball at the college ballroom Immediately following the banquet. Attendance at the banquet at which Dr. Collazzo will deliver his' final address, Is expected to set an all-time record. An excellent program has been arranged for this major event of the convention. 1 Final business matters will be concluded Sunday morning at an International Counselor's Breakfast Break-fast at Hotel El Escalante. |
