Show Twenty-two Varieties of Alfalfa Planted in Tests at College Farm The College of Southern Utah, the Iron County Extension Ex-tension Service and Dr. DeVero McAllister of the Utah, State Agricultural College, have cooperated this spring in test planting on the C S U farm of 22 varieties of al-; falfa. 1 The experimental program is being conducted to find the best strain of alfalfa for this area and to determine the winches most conducive to this ai'.-a. S'.ephen L. Brower, county agent, pointed out that the experimental ex-perimental plots will be watched fur the next two years, before a final determination can bo made. In older to assure an adequate determination each variety was planted in four different series, he added. The results of the test will be correlated with results of similar tests in other areas, and the findings will be released to the farmers of this area for their benefit. Euffalo and Ranger Alfalfa! have been, planted, the two most I recommended for this particular 'area, but a number of other var-I var-I iettes that should prove good producers pro-ducers in this climate and under the conditions that prevail have also been added to the test varie ties. One that Brower lncucaies may become a producer in this are is the Vernal strain. He ! feels that it may become a popular popu-lar variety in this area in the i future. A number of commercial varieties from the Northrup-King ! Company have been added. A strain known as the Brigham Young strain has also been planted in the tests. It is a variety varie-ty that was at one time recommended recom-mended by the famous pioneer. It has been continued in this southern area by some. A complete list of the 22 varieties var-ieties is as follows: Atlantic, Ari-zina-Chilean, Buffalo, B.Y. Strain, Caliverde, Dupits, Grimm, Ladak, Lahonton, Narragansett, Nemas-tan, Nemas-tan, Nomad, Ranger, Smith- I Thome Svn 1; South African variety. Stafford, Talent, Terra Verde (NK); Vernal, 919 (NK), '919 (15) (NK), 919 (201) (NK). j Farmers may notice that an .old time variety, Grimm, used in this area for a number of years is included, and also that vane-tie?, vane-tie?, from several foreign countries coun-tries are included. Although the final results will not be available until after the second growing season, Hrower indicated that the tests would be invaluable to the farmers of this area. Tests, he pointed out, in areas as close as the U S A C farms in northern Utah cannot bi used for our purpose because of the complete difference in suik, water availability and atmospheric at-mospheric conditions. |
