Show - YOUR POST OFFICE I By Gilbert L. Janson, Postmaster Ever since city delivery was begun in Cedar City the letter street collection boxes have been objects of mischief to a greater or lesser degree and ieriodically the attention of the public has been called to the condition with indifferent results. However, more recently there has been a marked increase In this type of lawlessness. The collection boxes at the Second and Third ward churches are now so frequently molested that unless there is a decided change for the better, these boxes will have to be removed re-moved and installed in some other oth-er section where they are needed and will be given more consideration consid-eration as property of the United Unit-ed States Government. Repeatedly the letter collection boxes In this city become the receptacles for handfuls of dirt and mud during the dry seasons and of snow and ice during the winter months. Occasionally the mail in the boxes has become so saturated and smeared that It can not be returned to the senders send-ers or forwarded to the addressees addres-sees because all the writing upon up-on it has become completely obliterated. Now and then bum-ing bum-ing matches are dropped into the boxes with the result that the contents have become so burned osr charred that further handling Is impossible. The locks are frequently fre-quently tampered with or plugged plug-ged wjih nails or pieces of wire so that they become unusable. It is almost impossible to keep presentable collection time cards on the boxes because of frequent defacement, destruction, or removal. re-moval. In fact, it has become an cxteremely trying situation to those responsible for the proper care and handling of your mail in this city. I believe that much could be accomplished in improving the present condition if parents I would impress upon their children, child-ren, the seriousness of molesting any U. S. mail box. The seriousness of the offense is emphasized by the fact that Federal law provides for "a fine of $1,000 or three years' Imprisonment Impris-onment for tampering with the letter box, contents, or lock" upon up-on conviction. In any district where the condition has gone out of control the boxes may be placed under observation until offenders are apprehended. Much improvement would also result from the public school box situation with their pupils and tactfully calling their at tention to the fact that no law-abiding law-abiding citizen of our country would even think of molesting or tampering with the letter boxes which are placed in convenient places to save them long "hikes" to the post office. It is to be hoped that the present pres-ent condition will improve so that not only may the present collection boxes remain where now installed, but that also sev. eral others may be added in districts dis-tricts where urgently needed. |
