Show Telephone Company Facilities Inadequate; Ble Expansion Program Now Underway Although rapid strides have been made In expanding its service since the end of the war, the Mountain States Telephone company is still faced with the greatest expansion program in the history of Cedar City. The company la using its existing ex-isting facilities to almost 100 percent per-cent capacity, according to Menzies Benson, local exchange manager, and every effort Is being put forth to provide service for those who desire It He points out that during the first ten months of this year the exchange has gained 171 telephones and still has a waiting list of over sixty applications for any type of service. Each new line requires an Individual pair of wires from the switch board to the location of the telephone, Mr. Benson states, and because of the unprecedented demand de-mand for service In many sections of the city, the company has strung miles of rubber covered army surplus sur-plus wire and dew drop wire in an endeavor to provide some type of service for those desiring it. He points out that there Is also a large number of requests being held for a different type service or a change In style of telephone In-strument. In-strument. Every effort is being made to relieve overcrowded lines and pro vide the type of service with the desired type of instrument wherever wher-ever requested, he says. It Is interesting to note that at the beginning of 1940 there were 1017 stations in service in Cedar City and as of October 31, 1947 there were 18C4 stations In service. The number of operators has increased from 11 in 1940 to 27 In 1947. During October of this year additional ad-ditional toll circuits were established establish-ed between Cedar City and Kanab. A new service, requiring four copper cop-per wires between Cedar City and St. George, will be completed this month to provide additional circuits cir-cuits to St. George, and a new circuit cir-cuit between Cedar City and Lund has been completed. The Western Electric Company Is now Installing necessary central office equipment to provide additional Salt Lake City, Richfield and Irovo circuits. This week a line crew will start placing a new copper circuit to Enterprise En-terprise to serve that area. With these additional toll circuits there should be very little, if any, delay in toll calls placed from Cedar City. Practically all material necessary for enlargment and Improvement of the city system Is now on hand, Mr. Benson states, and a project will be started soon.
