Show OPA Not To Blame For Failure To Open Cafe In Cedar EDITOR'S ' NOTE: Local OPA officials have asked that we publish the following statement In order to clarify certain misunderstandings: mis-understandings: Announcement was made in last week"s issue of the Record that Leo and Kay Knell had abandoned their plans to open the Piute Cafe toecause "they had found that the labor situation Is such that it would be extremely difficult to operate the place of business In the manner man-ner which they had planned ,and together with difficulties encountered encoun-tered in obtaining supplies and in meetlngOPA regulations, resulted In their' decision not to proceed with their plan to open the cafe." Officials of the Hocal OPA office of-fice feel the public should be put straight on OPA's policy In the opening of new cafes and the reopening re-opening or transfer of an old one. OPA regulations are formulated for the protection of the public and while tfay may seem complicated to the average person, the 'policy behind them Is sound. The OPA does not believe that a new oper-(See oper-(See OPA on Back Page) OPA Not To Blame (Continued from Page 1) ator starting a cafe or taking over the business of another one should have the benefit or prices higher than the operators who have struggled strug-gled through the complications of r:tinlnsr and price control during the war. Because of this policy a new operator taking over the business bus-iness of a closed cafe must take prices filed by the former owner. This puts him on exactly the same basis as the cafes which have been In continuous operation. A new operator Just starting out must set his prices by comparison to his nearest competitor of the same class. If however an operator can show that a price he has filed is not high enough to permit him a reasonable prdflt on that item, he may file an appeal for permission to raise his price and If the price )nnel and the District or Regional office thinks It is Justified, it may be granted. However, In the case of the Piute Cafe, the decision was made to abandon plans for taking It over before any definite Information was given as to OPA price regulations. OPA has taken a special Interest Inter-est In trying to help someone to reopen the Piute Cafe. They know the town needs the cafe and upeclnl trip was mode to Salt Lake Cit;- tj the District Office to straighten out their reglssration problem when rationing was the tightest, In order to help them operate op-erate successfully. In spite of this adjustment, the cafe remained closed. At no time has this cafe been under any greater hardship In Its operation than any other restaurant in this locality and If the building owner cares to reopen the cafe or make any kind of an agreement for Its opening, the CPA will cooperate with them In every way to see that they receive the same fair treatment as their competitors. |
