National Defense Results in Railroad Revenue Increase The National Defense program and Improved business conditions Increased the freight revenue of the Union Pacific three per cent In 1940, according to the railroad's annual report being distributed to stockholders Monday. It Is stated that although there was an Increase of 7.7 per cent In ton miles of revenue freight carried, this was offset in part by a decrease de-crease of 4 3 per cent In average icvcuue per von mne aue principally principal-ly to fluctuations In the classes of commodities transported. Passenger Passeng-er revenue decreased 9-10 of one per cent. This decrease In passenger passeng-er revenue was due to variations In classes of travel, the total volume of business handled being approximately approxi-mately the same as In the previous year. Common stock earned $6.96 per share as against $6.74 in 1939 and $6.00 per share was again paid In dividends on the common stock. .
