Show Special Session Of Legislature Expected May 19 It is expected that the Utah state legislature will go into a second special session on Monday, May 19th. if present plans are carried out, according to a report appearing in the last issue of the Salt Lake Times. The special session will be called to consider appropriations for operating op-erating the state government for the next two years, appointments to boards and commissions by the governor, and laws to enable the state to cooperate in the national defense program. Governor Maw is reported as saying experts working out his reorganization re-organization plan on the basis of bills passed in the first special session ses-sion of the legislature, have assured as-sured him they will have the new setup completed in ample time for the governor to make appointments to the new departments in the special spe-cial session and to enable the legislators leg-islators to make appropriations for these departments. The governor has expressed the hope that some of the departments can be set up before the special session convenes, and announces the task will be completed during June. In connection with the proposed appointments to the boards and commissions, the governor said he had been carefully considering n long list of applicants. His main consideration has been given to the various individuals on the basis of their qualifications to serve the state in an important capacity rather than for specific commission assignments. Governor Maw has indicated he would call into conference representatives repre-sentatives of labor, Industry and patriotic organizations to help lu devising ways and means for coordinating co-ordinating the state laws with national na-tional defense legislation. One of the main purposes of the conference, confer-ence, according to the governor, will be to determine the basis of objections to the defense measures killed in the first special session. It is a'.so expected that the governor gov-ernor may ask for authority to establish a home guard. Although1 he has tl' power to create a defense de-fense advisory council, the legislature legisla-ture must appropriate the funds on which it would operate. |
