Show FOR CLEANER SPORTS IF a real sport ia not generous and square, he is not anything. And somehow it occurs to us that it is time that a decided stand were taken for cleaner, higher class sports in southern Utah, or that they should be abolished altogether. This shocking account is brought back by the boys of this place who attended the racing tournament at Panguitch recently: After the fatal race in which a resident of this county was killed by the horse he was riding falling and rolling heavily over him, it was suggested to the winners of the money bet that the portion contributed by tho dead man be returned to his family. To which some of the hardened character interested in the result of the race replied : "A dead man's money is just as good to us as any other. When you bet with us you want to get your horse over the line first, or expect to lose your money." Such callousness cal-lousness is truly revolting, and reflects a degenerate degen-erate condition in sporting circles in our section of the state that we very much regret. At St. George last week an example of unfairness was exhibited when a professional player was included includ-ed in the St. George team competing with the Cedar team. They carried it off smoothly until the St. George team came up against the Santa Clara team for a game. The Clara team knowing the facts refused to play until the professional man had been dropped, and still claimed their right to the pures in the absence of the game. When St. George agreed to drop the objectionable player, Cedar of course came back for another trial for first place. Without the aid of this man it was apparent that the Cedar team would win easily. Santa Clara threatened the withdrawal of 32 prospective students from the Dixie high school at St. George if they were not given a fair show. St. George's crookedness had gotten them into a dilema. The faculty of the school wore brought into the tangle, and as the only way out without either losing thte Santa Clara students from the school or losing the purse to Cedar, the purse was "whacked up" virtually before the game between the St. George and Clara teams. This is what we call "unclean sport" and it ought to be frowned down by all honest and self-respecting citizens of southern Utah. |
