Show H OUR CANYON ROAD. H THERE is nothing that the people Hj of Cedar City and locality can devote H their attentions to at the present time H that will bring thorn greater returns H than the mnttcr of a good road into H our mountains and canyons. Recently H extensive investigations and superficial M surveys have been made that arc very H encouraging. They show that at a H cost of only n few thouHand dollars a H good automobile road can be construct. H rd as far as the Navajo lake, which is H one of the acknowledged beauty spots H of the Rockies. Yet this is only one H of a hundred beautiful, cool inviting H resorts with which the mountains cast H of us abound. The construction of a H road into these beautiful and inviting H summer retreats will make this sec- H tion of the country famous for thou- H sands of miles around as. a summer H camping ground. H Add to this feature, which is sufllc- H lent justiflcntion for the expenditure H required for the road, the industrial H importance of the undertaking, and H its signiflennce can scarcely be fully H appreciated. Among other things, it H will open to the local markets 20,000,- H 000 feet of good saw timber, which H will be sufllcicnt to supply the demand H for many years to come; it will givo H the people easy access to millions of H fcot of good barn and fence timber; H it will give a good roacl to the coal H measures, our principal sourco of fuel H supply, and it will enable hundreds of H people of our own community to seek H rest nnd rcposurc for a fow days, at H least, in the cool mountain woods, who H arc now unable to avail themselves of H this great luxury. H Next Wednesday has been set n- H art to 'make a commencement on the H good work. On thnt day it is proposed H that every man in the community lay H aside his private nfTairs for one day H nnd join in a gigantic road bco in the H canyon.- - The ladies arc being asked H to prepare and serve lunch for tho H , 0Lun '.-8 expected that the day H will bo a pleasant one as well as a H most profitable one to this community. H We have good assurnnccs that the H Forest 'service will materially aid in H the construction of the proposed road, H nnd it is also hoped that wo may be BB ablo to obtain some assistance irom H the state road commission. The State H engineer will bo hero tho latter part of H next week to look over the route, and H it is proposed to make the canyon H passable for automobiles as far as pos- H sible prior to his coming. H ' All good progressive citizens will m try to shape their affairs to participato fl in the bco. |
