Show VALEDICTORY I With this issue of The Record, the writer sev- i ers his connection with the paper, after eighteen I months as its editor and manager,, and surrenders its management to the owners, the Southern Utah I ' Publishing & Printing Company. I During the time that we have directed The I j Record, we have endeavored to serve the people of Cedar City and vicinity faithfully and conscien-H conscien-H jj tiously, having but one object in view, that of mak- ing of this paper one that would fairly and can-I can-I didly chronicle the activities of the community, without bias or prejudice. In our editorial policy, I we have endeavored to defend justice wherever I found, and to oppose wrong when we believed that I ' the best interests of the people required it. K At the time of our affiliation with The Record Iwe stated that we should endeavor to treat every one with equal consideration, but that we did not expect to please and satisfy all, for the best man whom the world has ever known, the only perfect man, was spat upon and crucified. If his perfect life could not save him from the wrath of evil-. evil-. thinkers, why should a mere mortal, with his many faults and frailties expect to please a community m;. of people of many natures and many impulses? I i We did not expect to do so, and we do not think we i . have. We may have made some enemies, but if l f so we are proud of them ; as proud of them as of the I I friends we have made. It has been truthfully said Ii, that the man who makes no enemies is the man Htf who says nothing, does nothing, and is nothing. Ft' Those who may not think kindly of us do. not hold Hi . ...such thoughts because we .have not JxeateuL.thenx iuMWMMMMr--sTightea them, have misrepresented them, or have He not given them exery consideration which a rea-Hfc rea-Hfc sonable person could request, but because a selfish 1 1 nature has wanted more than these, a nature that ii could magnify the faults of others but who sees ! nothing but -virtue in its own conduct. The associations and relations with the owners . and directors of The Record have been the most I ) pleasant, with but one lamentable exception, and 1 1 we wish to take this opportunity of publicly com- I , mending the men who are the directors of the I ' paper for their fair and honorable conduct. Much I - has been said by the ever-ready tongue of the gos- sip respecting the "dictation" of the policy of the H paper. Inasmuch as we have nothing to gain or I nothing to lose by making such a statement, but I I feel impelled to speak in the interest of fairness, I f, we wish to say that the policy of The Record has Hlj not been influenced or controlled, nor has any H effort been made to control its policy, by the board I j of directors of the paper, or any of them, not so I much as a suggestion. H. ; It has been our pleasure to see the number of I f- readers increase from 428 at the time we assumed I ' the management of the paper, to a total of 619, on I r j the 20th of the present month. In every town in ii Iron and adjoining counties, with one exception, '! more papers are taken today than when we as- ' sumed the task of attempting to get out a paper I that would please the people. As to our success Mi , in this respect, the above figures should disclose I'. the answer. However, the business of the city I - - and county has been divided between this paper I ' and the other paper printed in the city, and the I conditions arising from bitter competition com- 1 petition that has at times been too bitter has de- ' cided us that we can not do justice both to the 2 owners of the plant and to ourselves, which ,. prompts our decision to retire. I To those who have assisted us in our work, either morally or financially, we extend our thanks, I and trust that their support has been deserved. We feel especially grateful to Senator II. W. Lunt, I , Bishop Lehi W. Jones, Randall L. Jones, John S. I , Woodbury, Hon. Wilford Day. Bishop A. G. Math-' I eson, Chas. S. Wilkinson, Dr. A. N.. Leonard and I . j G. W. Decker. Others whose support and encour-I encour-I , j agement have been a strong factor in stimulating I U our efforts are, H. II. Lunt, Wm. Houchen, Mrs. '! Mame Thorley, W. II. Leigh, Jethro Palmer, II . I J. Doolittle, Peter B. Fife, Wm. R. Palmer, Par-H Par-H ; ley Dalley and John G. Pace. t f" There arc many others whom we should like ' t&include, but the list would be too long, but we I . feel our appreciation, even though we are unable I': H Ma to express it. In conclusion 'we wish to say that so far as the paper is concerned, we leave it with malice toward none, satisfied that we have done that which we believed to be for the best interests of Cedar City, Iron County, and Southern Utah. If we have erred, it has been a mistake of judgment, judg-ment, not of intent. The friends we have made here we hope to always retain. For Cedar City, we believe there is a bright future not far distant but that goal can the more quickly be reached if the people will but put aside the trivial differences that prevent a united people, and join in working and striving for that which will benefit each and all, with selfishness and jealousy banished and in its stead a greater reverence for the Golden Rule. |
