Show HAPPENINGS IN THE MOHW COLONY More details of the Killing of George Redd and Execution Execu-tion of Mexicans. ' LIVES AND PROPERTY WITHOUT PROTECTION On Account of the Frequent Changes in the Government Officials arc Afraid to Act. Colonia Jwuez, Mexico, Feb. 14 Our little colony is weighed down with grief and sorrow over tho unfortunate events of this week. On Monday morning about three o'clock, Mr. Geo. E. Redd went out to his cow corral to see what was going on, and found three natives apparently milking a cow, and ho ordered them away and ono of them pulled his pistol and threatened to shoot Redd; but just at this moment Aldelbert Taylor, who occupies part of Mr. Redd's home, camo out with a shotgun and after a heated conversation all walked as far as the house together, and the two Colonists retired to rest again. In a short time there was an uproar at the barn, and squealing of pigs, and Mr. Redd proposed going out again and driving the disturbers away. Mr. Taylor objected, saying they had doubtless armed themselves and would probably shoot them down." There hnd been a strike in the shoe shop of which Mr. Taylor was manager, mana-ger, and the work was shut down, and for this there seemed to be a grudge against him, which was probably the main cause of the trouble. Taylor, .therefore, advised his brother-in-law to go to the houso of Felipe Chaves, a prominent man here, and he did so; but Felipe advised him to get the policeman, a native living on the lot adjoining Mr. Redd. This he did, and together they approached tho barn in the bright moonlight, and as they reached it, tho three men stepped from behind the corner and gave them two volleys, killing tho policeman instantly and shattering the leg of Mr. Redd, from which he died that evening. One of tho three murderers is a young man who has grown to manhood in this colony, col-ony, and a stepson of tho policeman who was killed. No doubt tljey mistook mis-took tho policeman for Mr. tTaylorj -gaanmea.urlntrtho last week:' "H I vnt i -- j.-a i-hm -.,, -.... uu no,, w; -.a vo mai L2mOa1iAVI RkHtAnH m " T A rrre tnreo then escaped and have not been seen since. Monday the Constitutionalists came and carried off fivo of our natlvos, one being our President Camilo Acosta and his son Florencio, for twenty years residents of this colony, also Victor Gocthals, a halfbreed, Auas-tario Auas-tario Hjar and Luis Baldovino, and next duy thoy wore executed; three of them leaving widows, and the next day two more were caught and executed, exe-cuted, leaving families without their head. Friday a two year old son of Juan Rodrigues fell under a loaded cart and was run over and killed. This, coupled with tho horror of tho burned passenger train in the Cumbres tunnel, is a severe strain upon us. Slnco ridding rid-ding our town of our least desirable citizons tho balanco of the bad lot have moved away. While the Mexican on tho average is a very good citizen and neighbor, our colony has been tho dumping ground for this whole section of the country, for hero they lived in peace and had no fear of punishment for their crimes. Owing to disturbed conditions wo have had no peace officers who dared do anything, for first ono party came in, then tho otherjand officials were afraid to act. Our president had told tho bad ones of his cliquo that soon wo would have to go, and thoy would possess our homes and property, and those living in homes of absent colonists col-onists refused to vacate even on an order from the owner, saying the owner must appear himself and settle i up many times, saying thoy would) colloct fifteen dollars a month for( taking caro of property, when meanwhile mean-while they had lived n tho furnished homes and had oyerthing produced on trees and gardens, poultry, cows and teams. Since tho leading grafter is removed, many families left at onco without trying to collect their unjust, demands. Somo now say tho Mor-, mons gave tho information leading to tho execution; but of this we-are, happy to say tho information came, from their own spies, and natives, who livo here. XAVIER. ' ! |
