Since the world learned that this city of 40,000 people had subscribed a million as capital stock to the Exposition: had I voted bonds for buildings and improvements in connection with ' the Exposition to the amount of i another million; had won the backing of the State Legislature I to the extent of half a million; J had voted harbor improvement ! bonds for a million, and had done j many other things to prove its , possession of public spirit and 'enterprise; since word went 1 abroad of these things, there has be?n a great tide of travel to San Diego and last year 5,000 , houses were built in the city to accommodate the newcomers, 1 with not a house now vacant. The population has increased so ' rapidly that it lias been hard to accommodate the increase. Pros perity is evident on every hand. The world is taking note of San Diego and it is beginning to realize re-alize that if it was thought rather small to have a world's fair, it will be quite big enough before the gates are opened to the public. |
