Show RAILROADS MUST BE ALLOWED TO RECOVER The sporadic demand for government govern-ment ownership of railwnys combined with a constant crusade of legislation kept the railroad question fresh in the minds of the people beforo tho war. During the war tho government took control. Tho regime was not popular. Nothing has transpired in a long time that has so discredited tho project of government ownership as the things that happened under government gov-ernment control. What the people want is honest nnd efficient private operation If they get it by an awakening of conscience on the part of railroad executives and management, so much the better. Pros. Fairfax Harrison of the Southern Railroad says: "It now remains re-mains for private management to resume re-sume the practice of competitivo efficiency nnd self-relinnt initiative which distinguished the American railroads during so mnny years and to justify the preference of the American people for that form of administration by making possible not only the success suc-cess of individual companies nnd tho prosperity of their loyal employes but a constant nnd progressive reduction of rates accompanied by an enlargement enlarge-ment of service to the public such as mny be traced thru tho old fashioned railroad statistics. No one can expect this to be accomplished over night, considering the prnctical conditions, but n start can bo made at once." |
