Show THE AMERICANIZATION PROBLEM FACES UTAH There arc twenty eight thousand adults in this state who cannot read or speak the English language according to information contained in a pamphlet pamph-let "Americanization in Utah" issued by tho Extension Division of tho University Uni-versity of Utah and written by. Arch M. Thuruman, state director oficpri-ca"nlzation oficpri-ca"nlzation nt the request of University. Uni-versity. Mr. Thurman states that the problem prob-lem in this state is difficult since those who need Americanization education 4 live in mining camps and industrial centers among their own countrymen nnd do not learn American customs and language. Mr. Thurman believes that this is work for clubs, schools and industrial organizations. In discussing the work that has been done here on this problem Mr. Thurman writes "In Utah the Inst session ses-sion of the legislature passed an Americanization net providing for leadership in this work. They nlso appropriated ap-propriated a certain fund for distribution distri-bution among the districts doing Americanization Am-ericanization work. This is evidence that the people of the state arc determined deter-mined to accomplish the solution of this problem in the most effective way." The Extension Division of the Uni vcrsity offers courses in Americanization Americaniza-tion for Teachers by correspondence under tho supervision of Dr. R. D. Hnrriman; they nlso have films for distribution that aid Americanization. |
