Show NARROWLY ESCAPES SERIOUS INJURY Falls From Bellfry of School Building Through Ceiling. Recieves Bruises. When the fire broke out in the Dalley home last Wednesday morning Percy N. Wilkinson was engaged in repairing the public school building, and was one of the first to observe the smoke. Without delay he clambered up into the belfry of tho building to ring the school bell and assist in spreading the alarm. From the floor of the tower a ladder extends to the bell hanger. hang-er. With one hand grasping tho top of the ladder, Percy reached out with the other and took hold of the rope. The movement caused the ladder to break, and down went man and ladder. Percy struck the ceiling of the second floor of the buliding, crashing through the lath and plaster. His right arm caught on the joist and he might have saved himself had not the upper portion of the ladder struck him on the head. The force of the ladder precipitated him to the floor below where he landed among the seats. He fell a distance of fully thirty thir-ty feet, and that he escaped serious ser-ious injury was sheer good luck. As it was he was severely bruised and his right arm badly wrenched, but Percy says "that was nothing." |
