Show um) . A CASUAL SUGGESTION PROPRIETORS of the local pool halls are asking that the city ordinance regulating the licensing of same be amended so as to permit the payment pay-ment of thct license quarterly as other business establishments es-tablishments arc permitted to do instead of in one lump sum for the year, which it is easy to sec is some-.vvjiat some-.vvjiat burdensome. For a hall operating three tables at $300 per table, it means the payment of $900 before the business can open up. As we interpret the minds of the councilmcn there is no disposition to try to freeze out or discourage the operation of pool or billard tables, but they want to safeguard the interests of the city and avoid the diminuation of revenue from this source. It was argued at the meeting meet-ing last evening that should the petition for a change of the ordinance be granted, the pool rooms might be closed for the three dullest months of the year. Now, why not change the ordinance to permit of the issue of license semi-annually? This would cut the periodical payment down one-half, which wc are sure would be a very great relief to the petitioners, petition-ers, and at the same time would remove the possibility possi-bility of the suspension of the business part of the time, as it is certain that there would not be six consecutive con-secutive months in the year which the pool men would care to lose. |
