James Mair of Walker Bros, returned last Wednesday from a purchasing trip to New York. The Keith-O'Brien Dry Goods company com-pany are preparing to open on a large scale next month. Goods are arriving daily by the carload. The interior fittings fit-tings of the big store are neat and attractive, at-tractive, whilst the popular manager promises that' the latest styles in alii departments will far excell all interior decorations. . . Miss Fitzgerald of the Union school is located at the Cullen hotel. E. W. Johnson, a prominent hotel-owner hotel-owner and mining man of Boise, is in the city today attending to mining business. The pupils of Miss Kate McKenzie of the Oquirrh gave her a surprise party on Friday evening at "The Halls." The evening was delightfully spent with games, after which a dainty supper was served. Miss Margaret Ryan entertained at cards last Thursday evening. P. J. Donohue of the Western Exploration Ex-ploration company's staff, accompanied by J. J. Burke, came in from Grass Valley, Cal., yesterday morning, after having seen the new gold mill get down to regular work. Miss Julia Cullen and Miss Florence Flor-ence Sears gave a dancing party at the home of Miss Cullen Saturday. Sr William Bartling of the New York Cash store left Monday morning for Los Angeles, on the advice of his physician, phy-sician, where he expects to spend some weeks convalescing. s Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Gray left Friday morning for Chicago. D. E. Burley, general passenger and ticket agent for the Oregon Short Line, left Monday for a trip to the Hawaiian islands. He is accompanied by D. H. Peery and expects to be gone about a month. D. S. Spencer will have entire charge of the business during his absence. ab-sence. W. H. Sells, formerly an old-time resident of Salt Lake, is in town from San Francisco, where he has been holding hold-ing a position in the custom house. Mr. Sells has been transferred to Galveston, Gal-veston, as an inspector of customs for the time being, but will return to San Francisco. He is visiting with his daughter, Mrs. J. T. Richards. Mr. D. E. Burley of the Short Line was the guest of honor at a dinner given by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Quigley last Friday evening. The table decorations dec-orations were most artistic and a fine menu was served. The other guests present were Mr. Schumacher and Mrs. J. A. Foley. Mr. Burley leaves shortly for a trip to Honolulu. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Bintz afe back from California. Miss Mabel Renshaw of Butte is visiting vis-iting Mrs. A. W. McCune, Jr. In the absence of Mrs. Gray, who was obliged to go east with Mr. Gray Friday morning, Mrs. John Marshall received with Judge Marshall at the card party Friday evening. 'The. home was beautifully decorated for the occasion, oc-casion, the principal colors being red and green. Score and tally cards were hand-painted in cherries, and the guests were seated at twenty tables. Sixty-three was the game of the evening, even-ing, and the hours were spent most delightfully. Mrs. Benedict, wife of Dr. C. M. Benedict, who has been in a precarious condition for two weeks, showed a slight improvement this week. George M. Scott, president of the George M. Scott-Strevell Hardware company, who for more than thirty years has been closely identified with the business interests of Salt Lake, has decided to retire from business, and left Tuesday afternoon for San Francisco, Fran-cisco, his former home. Miss Hattie Jennings was guest of honor at a card party given Monday afternoon by Mrs. A. W. McCune, jr. The guests who enjoyed the game of whist were: Mrs. E. V. McCune, Miss Groesbeck, Mrsfi R. C.
