Show I A favorite expression with fanatical Protestants is to call Ireland "a priest ' ridden country." As a matter of fact f there is only one priest for . every j S91 Catholics while every 363 Episco- I palians In Ireland have a minister. !A11 Catholics know that one of the great difficulties under which the church labors is scarcity of priests. o . The Presbyterians have at last revised re-vised their creed regarding infant damnation. It Is strange that so hor- rible a doctrine as that a child could "J be born to be damned through all ) eternity for the glory of God could have so longed survived. Few adher- , ' ents of that faith In recent years prob- ' ably believed In that part of their creed. u The celebration of the two hundred and fiftieth birthday of the city, of New York has called attention to some Interesting facts concerning the great metropolis. New York la prac-- prac-- tically a Catholic city today. The Catholics now outnumber all other denominations combined and there are more Catholics in New York than In any other city in the world. o Salt Lake City may well, be proud of the way the President of the Republic Re-public was entertained during his short visit last week. Everything passed off without a hitch and the magnificent, turn-out of horsemen and .. others who took part in the parade, ; - v as well as the thousands who lined the sidewalks must have impressed even those who are accustomed to the vast . crowds of great eastern cities. . o ''.;? A desperate criminal, convicted by a jury of his peers of a most brutal murder, lies in jail at Cheyenne in no immediate danger of the gallows. He seems to . have plenty of money and as long as that holds out he will probably be able to get new trials, stays of execution, etc. In fact he is a great deal safer inside the jail than out of it. The direct results of his successful suc-cessful fight for delay has been the )yai hing of a man at Newcastle, Wyo., j by a mob who were thoroughly con- j vinced that the courts would not be able to do justice to the murderer. It is terrible to contemplate the state of practical anarchy into which the i whole country seems to be drifting owing to the failure of the courts to deal out speedy justice to convicted felons. |
