Show RODEY MADERA MISTAKE. Says Three-fifths of New. Mexico's Population Speak English. Washington, July 2. Delegate Rodey of New Mexico stated today that the report of his testimony of June 28 before be-fore the senate committee on tenitories relating to the omnibus statehood bill, contained an error, in that it made him say that interpreters were necessary in conducting most of the public business, as a majority of the people in New Mexico were unable to speak the English Eng-lish language. Mr. Rodey says that three-fifths of the population of the territory are English-speaking people from the states, and their families; that a good one-half one-half of the remaining two-fifths speak English well, and that but a few counties coun-ties in the territory' use interpreters at all, and then only because of a portion of the population speaking Spanish alone. He stated :that the language of the territory is overwhelmingly English, and is growing more so every year. |
