Show Business Conditions. j LEGITIMATE BUSINESS in Salt Lake is in better condition than ever before. The merchants all report trade fairly active and collections collec-tions good. Building operations nave been somewhat checked by the fact that prices soared skyward, both for building material and labor. This caused many who would otherwise have built to hold off until prices became be-came more reasonable. Perhaps this is just as well, as it prevents any dan--ger of overbuilding. This also has had the effect of making the real estate market quiet, and there is less demand for real estate than a year ago. Prices are steady, however, and when a piece ! of property is offered below the market I price it Is snapped up quickly. The mining stock boom has departed, and it is doubtful if it will return to' any great extent. The trading in stocks at a price beyond their real value, or in stocks which have no value at all, does not benefit the community, as it is merely a separating process changing the money from the pocket of the man who wants to get rich quickly to the pocket of the manipulator of the stocks. There has been a large increase in the number of those whose first thought is to keep their capital safe and be satis-fled satis-fled with a reasonable rate of earning. This weeding out of wildcat wild-cat speculations,, and- the tendency to solid and substantial investments is the best guarantee of the stability of the business conditions of the ' city and state. |
