He dwelt on the advantages of Catholic education, nd exhorted the a rents to see that their children attended at-tended the opening of the parochial schools on SeDt. 2. . Mrs. Gilpin arrived last week from New York, and is the guest of her daughter, Mrs. Otis B. Spencer of 1540 Lafayette street. Rev. J. J. Callahan of Butte, Mont., If who was the guest of Father M. F. allanan last week, returned to his t home last Monday evening. The two " priests were schoolmates together many years ago, and there formed a t strong bond of friendship. Father Cal- I lahan is nowpa stor of a nourishing parish in Butte, in the Helena diocese, I t which he was appointed a few years . n?,o. Although the dioceses are not far ' - separated, the reverend fathers sel- f ' dom meet, and the visit was enjoyed i U- both. : All the Catholic schools of the city . will open on Tuesday, Sept. 2. There I) will be few changes in the faculty of a any of these institutions. Rev. A. B. Casey, formerly assistant pastor of St. Leo's, and now pastor of the Manitou church, is ill at St. Jo- ! feph's hospital. At first typhoid fever ;J was feared, but now them is thought J t'. be little danger. j It was definitely announced last Sun- f day in Logan avenue chapel that f ground would be broken for the new (j cathedral on the last Sunday of Oc- tober. It is expected that a number I of prominent churchmen from other j dioceses will be in attendance and as- j si st at the services. j' Rev. John B. Guida, S. J., returned j . t this city last week from a sojourn j ff three years in sunny Italy. On Sun- i- iay afternoon hundreds of friends of j', th venerable priest called at the t Sarred Heart college to see him. He ! . talked kindly to all, and spoke of his ' recent visit to the pope. He said: '.'hen in Rome I visited the holy. ' father. Pope Leo. He is a very old nian, but has a wonderful personality. i One feels the keen, piercing glance if of those, black eyes, and knows that ' I the greatest statesman of his day yet possesses the will and mental strength of his youth. The form is slightly bowed, the hands thin, fine and snowy as a woman's, the face like old ivory. The holy father's figure I shall carry in my memory until death." A number of Italians of the north side who left the Mount Carmel church three years ago because of differences with the pastor, returned to the fold last Sunday ,and there was general -rejoicing among the congregation. The advances were made through the j Fratellanza of the San Rocco, of which i society Rocco Tolve is secretary. It is probable that in a short time the remainder re-mainder of the congregation will come back. In that case their new church, vhich has no pastor, will fall to Father Fa-ther Lapore. Miss Sedilia Trujillo- and Celestino Garcia were married at - St. Leo's church last week. The officiating clergyman cler-gyman was Father O'Ryan. The bride and groom will make their future home at Conejos. Miss Kathleen Hoban of Wilkesbarre, Pa., is visiting friends and relatives in Denver. St. Mary's Academy, .Denver, Colo. The September term of the academy will open on Tuesday, the 2d inst. The forty years of thorough and efficient work done by the academy renders advertisement ad-vertisement unnecessary, so we simply announce that the present term will open with all the old advantages and several new. The Library and Laboratory of the High School departments have been rendered especially interesting by notable nota-ble additions to their equipments. The musical department of the academy acad-emy is rejoicing in the advent of Sister Sis-ter M. Justine, formerly in charge of City, Mo., and ranked as one of the first violinists of Kansas City for the past ten years. Already the applications for new pupils, pu-pils, with the assurance of the return of the old, give promise that St. Mary's I roll call will run far into the hundreds for the coming year. I PUEBLO, COLO. Loretto academy, corner of Tenth and Elizabeth streets. . will begin its twenty-eighth year Sept. S. During the summer the big building has been thoroughly renovated and a number of needed improvements made. But few institutions of learning in the west have met with greater success than Loretto, Lo-retto, and its position in the educational educa-tional world is now so well established that each year sees a larger number of pupils enrolled than the preceding year. Indications now are that the capacity of the school will be tested at the approaching ap-proaching session. There will be practically prac-tically no change in the curriculum and the full complement of teachers will be in charge. Mrs. J. B. MeCormick. Miss Mary McCormick and Miss Ella Fletchsr have returned from a tjvo months' visit vis-it to friends in the vicinity of Salida and Buena Vista. - Nagle-Hickey Thursday, Aug. 21, 1902. at St. Patrick's church. Ex-Sheriff James Sweeney returned on Monday from the Laramie river valley, val-ley, where he spent ten or twelve delightful de-lightful days as the guest of J. H. De-tro, De-tro, one of the substantial stockmen of that section. For months Mr. Sweeney, Swee-ney, has been a great sufferer from rheumatism in his feet, and he thinks the trip did him a great deal of good as the twinges of pain are less frequent J and less severe. He says everything! is looking well in the valley, the cattle are fat. the hay crop good and the people prosperous and contented. The beef round-up will soon be started and a great many head of fine beef steers will be shipped out of there this fall.
