O'Connell, who has been chosen by the pope to succeed Monsignor Conaty as rector of the Washington university. An Associated Press cablegram from Rome two weeks ago, announcing the appointment, says: "Monsignor Dennis J. O'Connell, former rector of the American College in Rome, was today appointed rector of the Catholic university at Washington. Washing-ton. At the time of signing the brief making, this appoinment the pope also signed a brief by which the Catholic Cath-olic university is placed on the list of institutions under the jurisdiction' of the congregation of studies, of which Cardinal Satolli is the head. -This will place the interior affairs, of the univer sity in close touch with the Vatican. "It was known at the time of the university trustees meeting in November Novem-ber that the question of a successor to Msgr. Conaty as rector of the university univer-sity had been discussed and Msgr. O'Connell's name was suggested as his successor. Msgr. O'Connell is well known as the former rector of the American College at Rome. He is a scholar and a diplomat. His long mingling min-gling in the diplomatic circles of Rome has given him an urbanity and polish which only such a training can give. His rectorship of the American college testifies to his scholastic attainments. at-tainments. Since 1895 Msgr.
