" The Most Eminent Cardinal Joseph Sarto. patriarch of Venice, has been elected pope, and has assumed the name of Pius X. Such is the consoling information I have just received from Mgr. Del Val through a cablegram. I - "With the election of the new pope, a I new link has been added to the golden chain of succession of the Roman pontiffs pon-tiffs which stretched unbroken across tho broad and historic field from St Peter in the first century to the newly elected pastor on the twentieth. "Let us rejoice and return thanks to divine providence for having so speedily provided the church with another worthy pastor. Guided by our faith, we recog-I recog-I nize in him the successor of St Peter the vicar of our divine Lord, our spiritual spirit-ual .father, the supreme pastor of the church. As such he claims our obedience, obedi-ence, love and veneration, and I have no doubt that the Catholics of America, faithful to their glorious traditions, will equal those of every other nation 5n their attachment to the new pontiff. 'May God grant him a long and pros-. pros-. porous feign for the welfare of the church and th! honor, of the apostolic see. t 'LR ""km? this announcement to. you I have the honor to remain. -" "Most faithfully, yours in Christ. ...
