Show MARTINIQUE VISITED BY DISASTROUS STORM Washington, Aug. 11. The state oepartment today received a ca- blcgram from Consul Jewell at Fort de France, Martinique, -4- dated yesterday, confirming the press report of the disastrous torm on that island. The dis- patch says: "A terrific cyclone visited the entire island at midnight Satur- day: grout damage to crops and fruits; many houses in Fort de 4 France unmofd; trees two feet thick uprooted; one killed; con- dilate intact. At Tiinite seven Willed; many houses destroyed. Smaller towns damaged. New vil- lagR or Tivoli, Fond Ia Haye, Kounieols and Reculee destroyed, f rendering 5,000 survivors of last 4 year's disaster homeless. Reports from interior of the Island indeti- r.ite. Groat discouragement." |
