Show i f St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York, the Scene of An Imposing ceremony. i New Wk. Aug. 12.-With all. the ceremonial which the Roman Catholic church assumes on festal occasions, the Most Rev. John M. Farley, arcn-bishop arcn-bishop of the New York archdiosese, was invested with the pallium at the hands of the Most Rev. Mgr. Diomedos ! a conio, apostolic delegate to the j United Stales in St. Patrick's cathedral today. The priests and laymen composing tne guard of honor assembled in the diocesan house and marched to the archepiscopal residence where the prelates pre-lates joined them. AVhen Archbishop Farley, after the march from the archepiscopal residence reached the main entrance of the cathedral, cath-edral, he was met by the Rev. Father Iavelle, rector of the cathedral. He was also blessed with holy water and incense. The procession then proceeded down the middle aisle and when the main altar was reached the eeremonv of reception was sung and the archbishop arch-bishop took his seat on the throne. The priests of the diocese, in the order or-der of seniority, approached and tendered ten-dered allegiance. After pontifical mass, celebrated by Bishop John J. O'Connor of Newark, N. J., and a sermon by Bishop B. J.' McQuaid of Rochester, the papal bull of appointment was read by Father Lavelle. Then came the receiving of the papal blessing, the immersion of the pallium by Mgr. Falconio. assisted bv the Rt. R?v. Mgr. John Edwards, and an address by the clergv. an address by the laity and a reply bv Archbishop Arch-bishop Farley. Archbishop Farley was born in Nekton Nek-ton Hamilton. County Armagh, Ireland, Ire-land, on April '20, 12. He received his education at St. Maearten's College Monaghan; St. John's College. New York: St. Joseph's Seminary in Trov, and in the American College at Rome! It was on June 11, 1S70, after finishing ; his course at Rome, that Archbishop Farley was ordained to the priesthoou- in that city. I Returning to this country, he went to St. Peter's Churchat New Brighton, Staten Island, as assistant pastor. A few months later ho was made head of the parish. In 1S72 he was appointed by Pope Leo to succeed Bishop Mc-Nierney Mc-Nierney as secretary to Cardinal Mc-Closkey. Mc-Closkey. Honors were showered on him faster after this. Inl 188-1 he was maae I private chamberlain to Pope Leo. with the title of Monsignor. In 1891 he bo- ' came vicar-general of the arch-diocese of New York, the following year domestic prelate to Pope Leo, and in 1S95 auxiliary bishop of New York. 1 On the death or Archbishop Corrigan in May, 1902, all eyes-turned to Auxiliary Auxil-iary Bishop Farley as his probable. successor. suc-cessor. He was the unanimous choice of priests- and bishops, and his name headed both .lists sent to Rome from this country.
