Show Archbishop Ryan to Get Scarlet Hat. It is again stated that the next American cardinal car-dinal will be Most Kev. Patrick Ryan, archbishop of Philadelphia. His grace is said to be the personal choice of Cardinal Gibbons for the honor. Soon after his election to the chair of St. Peter Pius X gave an extended audience to Cardinal Gibbons, in the course of which, it is said, he asked the cardinal if hewould advise the appointment of another cardinal car-dinal in the United States. Cardinal Gibbons, it is stated, immediately brought to the Pope's attention atten-tion the name of Archbishop Ryan and the Pope, it is added, then decided to raise the archbishop to the Sacred College. His coming honor is known to Archbishop Ryan, but until formal announcement is made in Rome the archbishop and his official family will remain reticent. When a new cardinal is absent, being, as in the case of Archbishop Ryan, prevented from visiting Rome by just cause, the redberetta is sent to him and on receiving it he is bound to make oath, that he will, within a year, visit the Tombs of the Apostles. ' Mementos of Pope Leo. Count Ludovico Pecci, head of the Peeci family, to which the late Pope Jeo XIII belonged, has the intention of sending to the St. Louis Exposition mementos to Pope Leo. The exhibit will comprise a selection from the manuscripts of the Pontiff for his school days, a flint lock inusket which' he used in his youth when a sportsman; the first hat which he wore as Pope, a breviary which he used for years, his cane, the red umbrella which he carried in the Vatican gardens, garments of his ancestors, etc. |
