Show John Mackay's Kindness. " State Senator John P. Moore of Snow Hill, Worcester county, Maryland, spoke of a meeting he once had with John W. Mackay. "Last September I was in Paris with General Francis Waters and my son," said Senator Moore. "The boy was taken with typhoid fever, and I cabled his mother to leave on the steamship Etruria, which sailed from New York on Saturday. At the time I sent for Mrs. Moore my boy was desperately ill. On Saturday he had made some slight improvement., and., knowing how distressed his mother was, I determined, deter-mined, if possible, to get some word; to her of his improvement. "I had but the shortest possible margin mar-gin to work on before the steamer sailed. So I called for the manager of the cable eorapany and explained to him how anxious I was to get the message mes-sage through. "He shook his head and said: ........ "'I am afraid it cannot be gotten through in time.' "While I was talking I noticed a man sitting on a box in the office. He had a cigar in his hand and seemed to be waiting for me to end my interview. As soon as the manager had finished speaking the man got up and walked to my side. " 'I could not help hearing your conversation,' con-versation,' he saicL 'Write your message. mes-sage. If that mother's boy is 111 I will get her word that he is better. I know what will; make a mother's heart glad.' " |
