Show i KILLED j IN LOGAN CANYON,. Young Man Mistaken For a Bear Is Shot by Companion. Logan, July L'S News of a most deplorable de-plorable tragedy tnat was enacted in the mountains east of this city last evening even-ing reached here today. Niels Jenson, a youth of 1 or 17 years, whose home Is in Bear River City. Box Elder county, whs shot and killed by a companion named John Calvin, who mistook him for a bear. Both boyg were employed as sheep herders by Alma Nelscn of Brigham and had be?n ranging their flock in logan canyon. On the evening that the accident acci-dent occurred, according t' the story biomfht down by other herders. Jonscn and Calvin pitched camp near thi- head of what is known as Cowley canyon, on the right hand fork of Logan canyon. They had been annoyed for some time previous by bears, which startled tne sheep at night, and hence were on the lookout for bruins. About II o'clock young Jensen arose after hearing a com motion among t lie sheep. Calvin raised up in bod. seized his r'flv anu. not knowing know-ing that Jensen had gotten up. ni.istook him for a bear and, without any warning warn-ing whatever, fired at him. The boy pitched forward and lay still for a moment, mo-ment, then, rising to his feet, exclaimed: "John, old fellow, you have killed nie.'" .nel staggered over towards the bed. Calvin Cal-vin was simply terror stricken but. recovering re-covering possession of his senses, got ins companion into bed and attempted to stanched the flow of blood that came from a large hole in the lad's breast. After he had succeeded in doing so he lore madly over the hills in the darkness to another camp and summoned help. Jensen Jen-sen lived nbout half an hour after Calvin Cal-vin returned. Messengers were dispatched dis-patched to this city with the news, waile other nr-n stooped with Calvin, who is almost demented. Sheriff Kigby went up to the scene of the tragedy this afternoon after-noon and before returning with the body-will body-will make a thorough investigation of everything connected with the unfortunate unfortu-nate occuirence. j |
