Show FISHERMAN'S RING GONE. Someone Robbed the Body of the Late Pope. New York, July 25, The Herald's Rome correspondent cables the following: follow-ing: The ring of the fisherman, which should have been found on the hand of the pope, has di-appcared. It is not so much a question of its material us of its intrinsic value, for the ring of the fisherman is used to seal the papal pa-pal bulls and is the outward sign of authority of,' the pope. When the cardinal camerlingo certifies certi-fies the death of a pope he takes the ring of the fisherman from the chamberlain cham-berlain of his holiness. It is then destroyed in the presence of all the cardinals at the first meeting of the sacred college held after the pope's death. But when Cardinal Oreglia, the present pres-ent camerlingo, had certified to . the death of Leo XIII, .Monsignor Bisletti was a prey to the deepest despair and had to" admit that the ring had disappeared. dis-appeared. Cardinal Oreglia. who had, as is the custom, brought his declaration declara-tion of having received the ring from the papal chamberlain, all written out, had to put it back in his pocket. Mgr. Bisiettl can give no indication as to the robber. The theft must have '. taken place between the death of the pope and the mornlne- of the following J day, when Cardinal Oreglia officially certified to his death. During this time a large number of persons entered en-tered the death chamber. j The disappearance of the ring has caused a tremendous sensation at the Vatican, where it is the sole subject j of conversation. In the meantime, in the certificate of death of Leo XIII, air allusion - to receiving re-ceiving the ring has been suppressed. Friends of Mgr. Bisletti hope that ' when the seals are removed from the cabinets of the late pope the ring .will ho found in one of them, but very little lit-tle confidence is felt. The ring should never haye ,left the pope's hand, and, arid: every one denies having touched it.-r |
