Show In New York City there is a branch I cf the order of the Women of Calvary. I an order composed wholly of Catholic widows. This very worthy organiza- ' tion is a Roman Catholic body, but it is founded for absolutely non-sectarian work. It ministers to women suffering from incurable cancer without regard to race, color or creed. The members are all widows, the founder being Mme. Gamier, a pious, benevolent and widowed French lady. These women are in no sense of the word religious. They take no vows, wear no uniform and are not cloistered. Their lives are led. so far as mingling with the world is concerned, just as that of any other woman of pious inclination in-clination would be. Although no woman except she be a widow is eligible to membership in the Women of Calvary, its auxiliary, th Daughters of the Cross, is recruited from the ranks of single women or widows, just as it happens. Both these orders are pledged to the service of women who are incuraBIe cancer patients. pa-tients. They receive no salary or compensation compensa-tion in any way. The Women of Calvary Cal-vary dress the wounds of the patients, wait upon and watch with them. The I Daughters of the Cross do the house- work everything,, washing, scrubbing, 1 cooking. But as alt are serving the 'same Master, there is no such, word as I servant ever used. |
