Show SEAECH FOR A LOST MINE. Interest in an Attempt to Relocate the "Lost Frenchman." Los Angeles ExpressA Who has not heard of the "Lost Frenchman" mine? Like that of equal celebrity, known as the "Pegleg," it has had many inquirers. Years ago, the story goes, three Frenchmen came to America and scattered through the southwest in search of mineral wealth. One was fortunate enough to discover a remarkable mine, from which he took ' a sack of almost pure gold and sailed away to France. After visiting the old , home he returned and set forth into the desert again, since which time nothing has been heard of him. Wonderful ores he hud exhibited in- ; (lamed the minds of those who saw it, ; and when he failed to return, not j doubting that he had met with death j at the hands of the Indians, or pcr-1 pcr-1 ished from thirst or exposure, the pros- peciors or siiuuhth 1 aiaui in.i ut-.tn 1 I to look around for some signs of his j .' remarkable mine. None of the men who went out to hunt for it ever dis- covered the deposits, all traces of j which have long been lost. Now, it U said, one of the French- j man s friends knew of the discovery and imparted the secret to a man who j is in a Mexican prison undergoing im- . prionment for some offense, which prevents him from profiting from the knowledge gained. A countryman, who came recently from France, and who is living temporarily at the house of G. P. Ooytino in this city, is acquainted with the prisoner. This has led to the interchange of confidences which may result to the mutual advantage of all concerned. Under the laws of Mexico, a person who desires the offices of a prisoner may secure his release, it is said, on payment of the penalty attached to his commitment. It is possible that a way could be paved with cash for the release re-lease of a felon whose acts under ordinary or-dinary circumstances would- not be punishable by the imposition of a fine. No doubt is entertained by Mr. Goy-tino Goy-tino and his friend that some way can be found of getting the Frenchman out of tie carcel long enough to enable en-able them to visit the lost mine, the location lo-cation of which he is willing to dis- " '"""" lllllll.lMHIIIl.HJB.HJI ...I-.W.'-I ' ' I" "W i" - close jf released from prison bars. Some delay has occurred in carrying out the plans of the little coterie, but it is intended to satisfy the Mexican authorities with cash and to secure the company of the prisoner for a trip through the wild country in which the hidden treasures exist. If he can point out the spot from which the sack of ores was taken years ago, no doubt is expressed that the deposits that still remain are sufficient to make all three of the explorers wealthy beyond the uicams ijl axarice. ine miunciai re sources of Mr. Goytlno are expected o prove valuable aids to the adventure. |
