Show Archbishop Kyan for Indian Commissioner. Commis-sioner. The Washington correspondent of the Fhildelphia Public Ledger writes that Representative Morrell of Philadelphia called on the president March 27 in reference to the vacancy in the Indian commission caused by the death of the Protestant Bishop Whipple, and recommended rec-ommended that Archbishop Ryan be named as his successor. The president said he was pleased j 10 nave the recommendation of Arch-I Arch-I bishop Ryan, of whom he knew, and would give it consideration. Representative Repre-sentative Morrell directed the attention atten-tion of the president to the fact that the Catholic church is without a representative rep-resentative on the commission. That church had expended years of effort and large sums of money in the education educa-tion and conversion of the Indians, and was still actively engaged in the work. The labors of the commission were evangelical, and he had no doubt the appointment of Archbishop Ryan to its membership would be approved by men of every Christian denomination. |
