Show Catholics Won Mexican Independence The centenary of the independence of the Republic of Mexico will be celebrated cele-brated this fall. Regarding the part that the Catholic church will take in the celebration the well informed Mexican Herald says: "Though the ecclesiastical ecclesiasti-cal authorities of the Catholic church in Mexico are not able to state exactly what will be done in the churches to commemorate the centenary of the independence in-dependence of Mexico, it is given out that the Catholic church in general, and the diocese of Mexico in particular, will do Its part in honoring the memory of the heroes of that independence which was won by a priest, Father Hidalgo. He saw his land was crushed beneath the milliard injustices of Spain, and roused his countrymen, and took up the sword and with it eventually carried out the liberty of his native country. He had assistance, it is true, but he was the first, and at all times the most unquaillng. It is a pity that those who today rule Mexico do not oftener remember re-member that the freedom of the land they govern was obtained by the very church they persecute. Another Father Hidalgo is needed in Mexico to gain for the church and her children the vea liberty they won. |
