Show Japanese Prisoners. They have a clever way of dealing with recalcitrant prisoners in Japan. The prisoners are obliged to work in roomy workshops where there is an inflexible in-flexible discipline. The prison fare consists con-sists of rice, and each prisoner is given a portion, great or small, in proportion to the quanity of work done. If one refuses to work, there is no hectoring. He is led quietly away. But when meal time cxnes, he gets the smallest quantity quan-tity that the doctor advises is necessary to suppolt life. As he Is not fought he has no excuse for showing fight. No explanations are offered, but the hunger hun-ger treatment always reduces him to reason, and next day he is ready enough to take his work. The report does not say hoMr they would deal with prisoners whoe indiscipline takes the form of refusing re-fusing all food. |
