Show The Christmas Music. The choir at St. Mary's is ever up to the standard of good musicianship, but the music on Christmas day surpassed any ever heard in the old cathedral. Only one criticism could be made, which was that the tenor support in the chorus was not enough, but the tenor solist, A. J. Du Quesne, certainly certain-ly did splendid work in the solo parts. The "Veni Creator," by J. W. Curtis, was the feature of the musical service. There, were many tear-filled eyes amoiTg the choir members as Mrs. Hammer's exquisite lyric soprano sang the "Et In Carnatus Est" with intense feeling. Softly and with solemn heartfelt heart-felt expression, the entire choir en-toned en-toned the "Et Homo Factus Est" for the last time in the. little old cathedral. cathe-dral. If the forte attack on the "Cru-cifixus" "Cru-cifixus" was not just exactly as practiced, prac-ticed, it was because many voices were husky on the final measure. The violin solo by Edward Fitzpatrick Fitzpat-rick "was, as usual with this young artist, very beautiful. His work through the mass was excellent, as well as that of Miss Sylvia Kennah, a talented young violinist. C. D. Schet-tler's Schet-tler's cello playing was very much appreciated, ap-preciated, both in the solo au"d chorus parts. The other soloists, Miss Fitzpatrick, Fitz-patrick, Miss Seren. Miss O'Neil, Miss Farrell and Miss Holland, were all far above the average of any choir soloists in the city. George Soffe's fine baritone bari-tone voice is developing- more beauty and expression every day. His Latin enunciation is particularly good. Rev. Father Ryan, the spiritual director of the choir, was very pleased with the music, while Right Rev. Bishop Scanlan Scan-lan said, "I am certainly delighted over the splf ndid music, the best ever given in the cathedral." Right Rev. Bishop did not know that the cho'r selected the Dcchauer Cardinal mass because several years ago, when the mass was given the Bishop said he thought it quite the most devotional mass he ever heard. The members of the Cathedral choir are certainly devoted to the work and they know that the people of the church appreciate their devotion. On all sides is heard, the kindest appreciation apprecia-tion for the choir. The program of the Christmas service follows: Voluntary (violin) .. Lorette Beahler "Ring Happy Bells" Jordan "Gloria in Excelsis" Bordese Isabella Higgins, soloist. Violins Miss Luicima Compson. Walter Wal-ter Aures, Carl Spnngman, Humbert Prince. At the 9 o'clock the little ones of the Junior choir and the young ladles of the St. Cecilia chorus gave a pretty program with violin accompaniment by Carl Springman, Walter Aures and Luicine Compsan. Isabelle Higgins was one soloist, and little Loretto Boehler sang with much expression "Sweet Savior Bless Us Ere We Go." Rev. Father Kiely remarked on Thursday Thurs-day that the big choir was very fine, but the children's music appealed to him more than any other. This should encourage the little people and the Older girls to attend practice regularly, regular-ly, becouse the young singers of the present will make the future singers of the Cathedral. It would not be just to comment on the splendid music of the Cathedral choir without a particular mention of Miss Margery Mulvey's work as accompanist. Ever since September Sep-tember Miss Mulvey has attended all rehearsals, and as she is a thorough musician, her work has been invaluable. invalua-ble. It is the intention of every choir member to maintain the same standard stand-ard and to improve the music in the home to which the choir and people are going temporarily. |
