Show Our Citerary Cable. "What is probably the most complete and accurate catalogue of Catholic books compiled in this country will be issued in a few days in Milwaukee Wis. The catalogue was prepared by a committee of Milwaukee council, Knights of Columbus, and gives a complete list of the Catholic books in the Milwaukee public library.'. The catalogue numbers 156 pages and lists 1,043 volumes. There is in Dublin a small theatre, popularly known as the Mechanics, famous in the days of Young Ireland Ire-land and of the Fenian movement a3 a rallying place of the enemies of the Castle, which has of late years fallen into decay. A wealthy English woman an en-thusastic en-thusastic admirer of Mr. Teats has applied for a' patent to produce drama at this theatre. It is her intention to spend about $10,000 in renovating reno-vating the building and then. to hand it over to the Irish Theatre society, of which Yeats is president, for the production of Irish and classic drama.. Her application was opposed by the other theatre proprietors propri-etors in Dublin, and was supported by a number of men prominent in literary and other walks of life. Eventually the application was held over to see if an agreement could be effected with the opponents of tho application. The result i3 awaited with considerable consid-erable interest. f The story of Catholic emancipation in Ireland ,the end of which is not yet. is told, among other things of i intensely human interest to every Irishman and every Roman Catholic in the world, by the many con- i tributors to "Irish Literature" who deal with this and kindred subjects in its pages. The work, in ten volumes, vol-umes, which John D. Morris & Co., of Philadelphia, will publish this fall, touches Irish life at every point in its history, as well as every point in its social life and social development.. It gives as well examples of all that is best, brightest and most attractive, amusing, readable and interesting In the work of Ireland's Ire-land's authors from the days when thej- wrote in the ancient Gaelic language, which is today hardly decipherable de-cipherable by scholars, down to the present time, when the Irish people once again find literary expression ex-pression in their native tongue. The editor-in-chief is the Hon. Justin McCarthy, M. P. The assistant editors are Dr. Douglas Hyde! Lady Gregory. Dr." Maurice F. Egan, James Jeffrey Roche, and the managing editor is Charles Welsh, the biographer of John Xewbery, who was the friend and publisher of Oliver Goldsmith. In these volumes, which .will be fully illustrated, both in black and white and in color, the choicest specimens of Irish literature are brought within the reach of all. Mythology, religion, fables, folklore, poetry, po-etry, essay, research, history, science, memoirs, anecdotes, anec-dotes, fiction, drama, wit, humor and pathos of the Irish are all represented, and it forms a worthy monument monu-ment to the literary genius and national spirit of the Irish people. - . 1 |
