Show j BUTTE, MONT. The Rt. Rev. John P, Carroll, bishop of Helena, had a busy day in this city last Sunday. At 9 o'clock he celebrated mass at St. Patrick's church and at 11 o'clock mass in the samo church he preached a poxverful sermon, in the course of xvhich he paid a high compliment compli-ment to the miners of Butte. He said they were the salt of the earth in the Butte district and to the miners of Butte the city owes is prosperiry. In the afternoon Bishop Carroll attended at-tended a meeting of the newly organized organ-ized Society of St. John the Baptist, at xvhich he delivered an eloquent address ad-dress in French. Frank Boucher, president presi-dent of the society, presided. The attendance at-tendance xvas large and the remarks of the bishop loudly applauded. Speeches were also made by the Rev. Father De Siere and Rex'. Father Kealy, the latter lat-ter being mainly responsible for the organization of the society. The organization organ-ization meets each Wednesday" evening in Boucher's hall on West Park street. Iast evening Bishop Carroll attend ed St. Mary's church and administered the sacrament of confirmation to a class of sixty-two boys and girls. At the conclusion of the service Bishop Carroll delivered an address to the children and afterwards spoke to the groxvn people of the congregation. Bishop Carroll returned to Helena Tuesday morning. This completes the confirmation services in this city until the fall, xvhen the bishop will confirm a class in St. Joseph's church. The concert on Monday evening for the benefit of Father Barry's nexv parish par-ish on the west side, xvas an entire success. suc-cess. ' The Broadway theatre was filled with a large and fashionable audience, the boxes presenting a brilliant appearance, appear-ance, filletl as they xx'ere xvith parties gix-en by the patronesses and others who xvere interested In the success of the evenins:. Mrs. George E. Rockwood had a very ! attractive box party that evening, her! guests being the following: Mrs. D. J. Hennessy, Mrs. W. M. Txvohy, Miss Hazel Green of Philadelphia. Miss Belle Kirkpatrick, Messrs. Alf Kremer, Hudson Hud-son and Fisher. Later an elaborate supper xvas served at the Thornton, where J. Bruce Krcmer and Mr. Ra-kowfky Ra-kowfky of Detroit joined the party. Mis. Katherine T. Cotter xvas another anoth-er of that evening's hostesses, haxing as her jruests Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lavelle, Mrs. T. J. Walker, Messrs. Arthur Carson and Reno Sales. Mrs. Cotter later entertained her guests at supper at the Thornton. One of the most Impressive services xvitnessed in and about this city took place in Holy Savior church, Meadc-ville, Meadc-ville, last Sunday morning, xvhen the banner of the St. Philip and St. Joseph society xvas blessed by the Rev. Father Fath-er John B. Pirat, of Anaconda, assisted by the Rev. Father Sulivan. There were nine organizations represented in the line of march, which was headed by the Montana State band, four of the organizations coming from Anaconda. Altogether there were about 1,000 men in the. procession. The Rev. Father Pirnat, of Anaconda, delivered a sermon ser-mon to the assembled congregation in the? Slavonian tongue. Later Father Sullix-an spoke briefly in English. At the meeting of the Gaelic league last Friday night a committee xvas appointed ap-pointed to draw up resolutions of condolence con-dolence on the jftth of Dennis Murphy, Mur-phy, who was ' fcd in the St. Laxv-rence Laxv-rence mine TirVfStrv night. (.Dermis Murphy was a native of Ireland, and xvas well versed in the Gaelic language. The committee was composed of Michael O'Donoghue, D. D. O'Shea and Dennis O'Sullivan. Dennis Harrington and Miss Dora Singleton xvere married Tuesday of last xveek at 9 o'clock in the morning, the ceremony being performed by Re Father De Siere, of St. Patrick's church. The bride wore a very attractive attrac-tive gown of xvhite silk mull, and carried car-ried a bouquet of white roses. Miss Mamie Rogers xvas the bride's only attendant, at-tendant, end xxore a dainty goxvn of Ivory crepe de chine, and carried a bouquet of red roses. After the ceremony cere-mony a wedding breakfast was served at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Harrington, West Woolman street. The table xvas artistically decorated xvith white carnations and vines of smilax. Mr. and Mrs. Harrington, after a short xvedding trip, xvill be at home to their friends at 30 West Quartz street. After a short illness Mrs. Katherine Wall died Tuesday exrenlng at her home, 543 East Mercury street. Mrs. Wall xvas born in Ireland, August Au-gust 15, 1871, and came to Butte several years ago. She is surxived by her husband, hus-band, James Wall, and fix-e email children. chil-dren. Besides these there are left to mourn her untimely demise, one sister, Mrs. Edxx-ard Harrington, of Butte, and two brothers, Michael and Timothy Shea, also of this citv. |
