Show A CANADIAN NAVY. ! After all these years, the Dominion of Canada has discovered that it3 two sea coasts are entirely unprotected from the ravages of a foreign foe. so j we are to have a Canadian navy, at an estimated cost of $12,500,000. Thus the world will be given notice that if Germany or any other national j wishes to rival in bigness the navy of the British I empire, it will have to take into consideration the 1 rich and powerful dominion to the north as a fac- tor, as well as other colonies of the empire, which j have entered the field as militant defenders of the j home country. A short time ago it was reported f that some $20,000,000 would be asked from tha Canadian parliament by the advocates of a Cana- dian navy, but this amount has been materially re- j duced, with three cruisers and four destroyers aa I the initial contribution to the defense of the do- f minion. The proposal to build a Canadian navy has nat- I urally led to a discussion in the dominion as to the ! effect such a proceeding will have on questions ' which are more discussed in the United States than . ; at home. Will a Canadian navy foster nationalism 1 at the expense of imperialism? Will it tend to create a sentiment in favor of separation from the ; . empire? Will a Canadian navy imply that the do- j minion is to become a party to the "concert" of j powers of Europe? It is questions like these which I : have arisen since the first steps toward the creation ( of a navy were taken. However, there seems to be j ' no general opposition to the proposal to help the ' home government, the only opposition being as to f the form this help shall take. The discussion and the actual building of Canadian warships will be ' watched with interest in the United States, and we can but express the hope that the defenseless coast I lines will be amply protected in future years. j |
