Show RECALLS MEMORIES OF THE MacCORM ACK. MacCormack. The death of Bishop MacCormick, archbishop of Nisibus and late bishop of Galway, Ireland, whose death we recorded last week, leaves a sad blank in the life of the community. His kindly, generous disposition, dis-position, anel the broad-minded view with which he regarded passing questions ques-tions into which bitter feelings frequently fre-quently obtruded themselves, won for him the warm esteem and affection of all classes. During his lengthened career ca-reer he never made an enemy, and his demise has aroused universal regret. Educated at Maynooth, his mental ac--quirements and administrative ability soon became manifest on his ordination to the Mission at Westport. At that time his colleagues were the present Archbishop of Melbourne (Dr. Carr) and the famous Dean Ronan. Preferment Prefer-ment soon came, and in 1872 he was consecrated Coadjutor Bishop of Ach-onry. Ach-onry. In this enlarged sphere of action ac-tion he won the highest regard of his ecclesiastical superiors and of the public pub-lic generally. Early in 1S67 he was translated to the See of Galway and Kilmacdncgh and to the Apostolic Administratorship Ad-ministratorship of Kilfenora, and this elevated position he filled with much dignity and ability, until his resignation resigna-tion at the end of last year, when he was succeeded by the present bishop. In recognition of his lifelong life-long services to the church, on his retirement re-tirement the Holy Father appointee! him Titular Archbishop of Nisibus, and the honor was learned of with the greatest satisfaction by his many friends both inside and outside of the church. He had reached the age of 77. |
