Show ST. MARY'S ACADEMY. An. Afternoon Lecture and Interpretation Interpre-tation of Elocution. The lecture scheduled for December was given on the afternoon of the 9th by. Miss Maude May Babccck, professor of elocution at the University of Utah. The subject chosen for interpretation, "Monsieur Beaucaire," M-as preceded by afew of Tennyson's lyrics, those spo-ken spo-ken songs from "The Princess," Mhich are "ever M-elcomed by a literary audience, audi-ence, and in Mhose rendition Miss Bab-cock Bab-cock employed the nicest effects of voice quality and tone shading. Tar-kington's Tar-kington's story, a gem in itself, brief, brilliant, full of animated dialogue and withal a keen satire on the snobbery of sume people of rank, is admirably adapted for public reading; and in Miss Babcock's dramatic telling, it lost no whit of its inherent delightfulness. The rrencn accent ot the hero Mas not overdone, as is sometimes the case, but was moderated to a well-chosen degree and evenly sustained throughout. Perhaps Per-haps a slight lack of versatility in impersonating im-personating the distinct characters might be noticed here and there, which would be a disadvantage to any among the audience M-ho might be unfamiliar M-ith the context. The sniecess of the recital, re-cital, however, M-as fully demonstrated by the tense interest accorded the reader rea-der from the first M'ord to the last. 4 That Santa Claus has some skillful and industrious agents in these parts may be learned by a peep into the M-ork room of the class in embroidery. There you may see things of Deauty fashioned by deft and Milling hands for dear ones far away. M-ho if they lead these gifts aright will find in them many a chapter chap-ter of fond remembrance, every stitch a thought of love and good will, each fioM-er and leaf a story of filial or friendly devotion. Among the first pieces to attract the eye are several beautifully worked sofa pillows. Miss M. Desmond has produced a rich 'effect by a conventional design in autumn-leaf autumn-leaf shades on black satin. The Misses L. Burton, R. Huetson and M. McDon-ough McDon-ough have each brought out artistic color combinations on backgrounds of gray linen, M-hile a pictorial sketch outlined out-lined Mith the Russian stitch bears the name of Miss V. Bowden. There are also a number of centerpieces which compel admiration. liss F. Donohue hag worked out a pretty copy of maiden-hair ferns; Miss C. Bonner scatters scat-ters violets among her ferns; a border of nasturtiums bright and gay as tneir originals stands to the credit of Miss Ashton, while Miss Dodds has reproduced repro-duced a large bunch of marguerites. Little Beatrice Christensen has worked sprays of holly on a small doily, and many others are represented by sets of collars and cuffs and numerous dainty articles that attest the skill of their makers in the use of the needle.
