Show THE GERMAN EMPEROR. r J One of the most energetic sovereigns of LuroP t is Kaiser William of Germany. From ho morning to the late hours of the night, he at work and it is a rsure to see him work; ever,- , v bing is done so systematically and at the time aP- f pointed. He no ascended the throne than he showed that his one great desire was the ma- I tPrial and moral advancement of the Fatherland. WUe men shook their heads when he assiimed the reigns of power, and predicted every kind ct disaster dis-aster for Germany. "Too impetuous, too ideal tbev said, "and tbe nation is bound to be plunged info war or suffer something cist: ju?t as bad under hi rule" The wise heads were disappointed and r Kaiser William has shown him.-elf to be from the verv first dav be ascended the throne a strong, good and capable ruler. Deeply religious, he never neglects neg-lects to impress upon his subjects that the sum-mum sum-mum bonum of man's happiness is (rod and a constitution con-stitution without religion is a house built upon sand. He preaches to his sailors and soldiers when-ever when-ever an opportunity offers. Ubiquitous in his movements, move-ments, the heads of the various government departments depart-ments cannot tell the moment when he will appear amongst them. A strict disciplinarian, he expects everything to be in apple pie order and to move with the precision of men upon the chess board. A model father, he is devoted to his loving and helpful consort, and he is never so happy as when he is romping with his children. Even in his busiest busi-est moments he never forgets them, and it affords him the greatest pleasure to secrete in his pocket some little present for them. He has taught children chil-dren to be above all things practical and each one of them has to study some profession. The empress em-press is a model woman, so simple and so loving in her tastes, living solely for her emperor and .... .1, . f xT- il 1.', children, essentially a woman oi me uuec b..- kirche. kinder, keneh church, children and kitch- , en. The emperor is as much at home dining on the soldiers' humble fare as sitting at the costliest banquet. Many stories of his kindness and thought , even to the lowliest of his subjects are told, and t from these there are two which illustrate forcibly -J that thought and kindness. A corporal fell in love V with the sergeant major's daughter, but the latter would not sanction the wooing until the corporal got promotion. The poor fellow was naturally much disappointed and the emperor, going the rounds of barrack one day noticed the woe-begone 4 expression on the corporal's face. lie asked the corporal what was the matter, and tbe corporal told him his talc. The emperor laughed and passed . on, but soon after the corporal got bis promotion and his sweetheart. On another occasion the emperor em-peror was aboard ship and he suddenly encountered a sailor carrying a jug of beer in his hand. The sailor brought his hand smartly to his forehead in salute, but in his excitement he spilled some of tho beer, whereupon the emperor smilingly remarked : "Jock that was clumsily done; give me that jug and I will show you how it should be done." Tbe sailor handed the emperor the jug and tht emperor retreated a little and then advanced, and standing before the astonished sailor he drewT himself him-self up, brought tbe jug of beer to his lips and drained the contents, and having done so he brought his hand smartly to his forehead and saluted sa-luted the sailor with the words: "Jock, that is the way to do it. Go down now and get your jug filled again and sav it was I sent you." ' ' Tbe press all the world ovpr may sometimes be inclined to ridicule some of the emperors acts, but there is no gainsaying the fact but that Kaiser William is a great, a good ruler. When the great multitudes of Asia become civilized civ-ilized to the standard of the Caucasian race the ' silver question will become a momentous and disturbing dis-turbing one. A -r, The critics who say our navy is deficient in ar- j mor and armament never yet have said a word about the men behind the guns. t ' j With the thermometer hovering around zero, it would be impertinent to suggest the becomingnes3 of the directoire model. Still, the knockers haven't got any kick on the winter weather we have enjoyed for a week, if it is a real old-fashioned winter they want. , jTJ The after-Christmas bargains at the stores are a great temptation to the man whose credit 13 good to go just a little deeper in debt. Xo, he hasn't done anything that man with the sheepish look on his face. He is simply wear- ing his new Christmas tie. People in the cities are beginning to appreciate ; what was meant when it was reported that we were to have "bumper" crops. They are the bumpee. I It is pretty hard for some fellows to keep up j the merry Christmas spirit after they hare in- j spected the bundle. ; The people can now begin to do their Fourth v f of July shopping early. V We hope all the Xovember triumphant and de- f feated candidates enjoyed a merry Christmas, including in-cluding Mr. Taft and Mr. Bryan especially. t r T 1 - If Santa Glaus did not visit you, you may be V sure some careless persons did not do t;;eir shop- I I ping early. j It's time to polish up the old water wagon for a new start in the year of our Lord 1009. That new set of furs you gave to your wife for Christmas would have been greatly appreciated if ; ! you had anticipated the event a week. I i I |
