Show TRUST CONTROL. The Southwestern Oil company of Texas has retired from business because it couldn't make any money. Inasmuch as the Standard Oil company is outlawed in the Lone, Star state, the announcement announce-ment carries with it a bit of surprise. But, besides boosting the Standard from the state, the legislature legisla-ture has enacted a lot of special legislation in the form of excessive taxes which necessarily must be added to the cost of oil. 'As a result the Standard can undersell any Texas 'company in territory from which it has not been disbarred, and the state of Texas is enjoying a rather unique experience at trust busting. It is an old adage that the devil should be given his due. In the respect of being entitled to his due, Standard Oil and his Satanic majesty may be classed together. The Standard is pretty bad, but it isn't much worse than the legislation legis-lation enacted to control it, and it cannot be held responsible for the misguided though well intended legislation which graces the statute books of grand old Texas. |
