(Continued from page 1.) personate human beings are really devils which the church has always recognized as existing but which she forbids evocating or holding any dealings deal-ings with them. Even Moses forbade his people to hold any communication with spirits. There is also another idea regnant among people peo-ple and has been in ever- age of the Christian era and that is that the ancient oracles were manipulated manipu-lated by pagan priests and priestesses. Now that is a very great strain on the imagination. To entertain en-tertain the unprovable conception that for 4,000 years great emperors like Alexander, Ceasar and the ancient monarchs were always deceived when they journeyed to those pagan temples to learn the fortunes of war or any other event pertain-1 ing to the future, is not sensible. There must havf been something more than human sorcery. It must be conceded unless we wish to think that all ; these millions of ncople, kings, senators and his- j torians of pagan nations prior to Christ, vere insane, in-sane, that devils from eternity uttered prophecies through these stone gods or oracles. The highly intelligent Jewish people who honored the living and true God so believed concerning these idols, and because something more than the lifeless stone was there many Jews easily followed the idols. They appealed to them more than an invisible Creator who only spoke to their holiest prophets. The devils as gods would converse with anyone that could gain access to their temples. In conclusion it must bo affirmed that if superstition super-stition is detestible, irreligion and extreme skepr-ticism skepr-ticism are a thousand times more so. Hence it is that we find such gross superstition among races that had or really their ancestors had departed or apostatized from the true God. No men advanced superstition so greatly in the minds of many people peo-ple jas Spencer, Darwin and a host of scientists of the nineteenth century, who thought much and proved a great deal los. for when true religion is destroyed in the hearts of men, or to put it another way when a valid reasonable faith goes out through tho window of the soul a gross superstition wends its undisputed way through the door, for all nations and peoples that forget God shall be turned into hell, and the places that knew them once shall know them no more.
