Senator Quarles of Wisconsin, who is chairman of the committee on Indian affairs of the Senate, and who made a tour of the Indian reserves last summer with Indian Commissioner Jones. today-talked today-talked to the president about the Indian In-dian question generally. He agrees with Commissioner Jones in the belief that to make the Indians self-supporting should be the aim of the government, govern-ment, and that its attainment would solve the problem. In a general way he thinks the first i steps must be the breaking up of tribal relations, the allotment of lands In ! severalty and the admission of the Indian In-dian youth to public schools. The Indian In-dian eventually should become a citizen. |
