The following circular has been issued is-sued by Cardinal Richard, archbls'yjp of Paris: "It has come to my knowledge that Mr. Vilatte, who calls hlmseli.an American bishop, has performed, to' my annoyance, two sacredotal ordinations in Paris, and has given to them the license with which ecclesiastics are provided. I have been informed by the holy office that Mr. Vilatte has not received re-ceived any authority nor any jurisdiction jurisdic-tion from the sovereign pontiff. In consequence, con-sequence, if any of the ecclesiastics are presented to you, you will not permit them to celebrate the mass in your church." The new auditor of the papal legation, lega-tion, Rev. Dr. Francis Marchetti. arrived ar-rived in Washington on May 10 from Rome. Archbishop Martinelli and Rev. Dr. Booker, secretary of the legation, left Washington on the 10:35 a. m. Baltimore Bal-timore &-Ohk train for Portland, Ore., where the papal delegate conferred the pallium upon Archbishop Christie. The papal delegate will be absent from Washington for at least three weeks, during which time Dr. Marchetti will have charge of the legation. Bishop Farley laid the corner-stone of the new church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Sunday afternoon in the presence of more than 4,000 people. The church is mainly for the use of Italians. Ital-ians. When completed it will cost about $50,000. Father Ubaldus Mara-velle Mara-velle is the pastor. Many of his parishioners par-ishioners are laborers nl cpuarrymen and the priest has prevaWed upon them to perform the labor on the new church free of charge when they are not otherwise other-wise employed. The frescoing and painting is also to be accomplished in the same manner. Bishop-elect Orth of Vancouver, B. C, will be consecrated at the cathedral there next month. Archbishop Christie of Portland will be the consecrator. Rev. John P. Chidwick, chaplain in the United States navy, was formally notified on May 17 of his election as chaplain of Gloucester naval command of the Spanish war veterans, which is composed of officers and enlisted men who fought Cervera's fleet. Chaplain Chidwick accepted the position. Very Rev. Father James Patrick Klernan. pastor of St. Mary's church and vicar general of the diocese of Rochester, N. Y., died of pneumonia. He was principal of Nazareth academy and was one of the most widely known priests and teachers in western New York. For twelve years Father Kier-nan Kier-nan was pastor of St. Patrick's cathedral cathe-dral in Rochester. He was born in Og-den, Og-den, N. Y., in 1S55 and martieulated from St. Joseph's provincial seminary in Troy. He was ordained in 1SS2. At the synod of 1SS5 he was appointed a member of the diocesan school board, and it was due to his efforts that the Regents' examinations were secured for the Catholic schools of Rochester. s An official rescript from Rome, appointing ap-pointing Rev. Dr. Henry Granjon of Baltimore as bishop of Tucson, Ariz., reached the papal legation at Washington Wash-ington May 15. It is understood that both Dr. Granjon artel the bishop-elect of Savannah, Ga., Dr. Keliey, will be consecrated together at an early date.
