Show I i Pope Canonizes . I Rome, May 24. There was a magnificent mag-nificent spectacle in St. Peter's today on the occasion of the canonization of Jean Kaptiste de La Salle, the founder of the order of the Christian Brothers, and Kit a di Oaseia, a nun .of the Aucustinian order. The interior of the vast basilica was illuminated and adorned with niag-ni-ficent hangings and the building was lilled with a great concourse of people, including: all the pontifical dignitaries, .diplomats and the Roman nobility. Of the f-o.OOO spectators, about 30,000 were foreijn ;ilrrrims. Pope Leo, attired in his state robes, was borne fin the sedia gestatoria at the head of an imposing procession composed of the entire papal court, 3(1') patriarchs, archbishops, bishops, and four cardinals. A roar of cheering- rose from the multitude on the pope's appearance, but the applause was quickly hushed by the guards. When the cortege reached the choir the pope alighted from the sedia ges-tatoria ges-tatoria and took his seat on the pontifical pon-tifical throne, and the cardinals and othr ecclesiastics massed around him. ! The pontiff, after the usual prayers, pronounced the canonization and in-I in-I tertoned the te deum. At that mo- ment the bells in all the churches in I Rome rang out and the pope solemnly ! blessed the congregation and returned to the Vatican amid prolonged cheers I of the large audience. |
