Show AMERICAN ARISTOCRACY. ' A great deal of publicity has been given during the past month or two to a contemplated marriage between one of America's fair daughters and a representative rep-resentative of a certain royal family of Europe. There can be no doubt that this publicity was more or less embarrassing to the principals in the contemplated con-templated marriage, and even less doubt of the embarrassment em-barrassment felt by the. parents and friends of the young woman in the ease. As loyal Americans we must all believe that the young lady was too good to bo wasted on a foreign titled personage, but, on the other hand, it is also quite probable the friends and relatives of the gentleman honestly felt that he should not waste his title upon a mere American. In view of the difficulties which have arisen in this contemplated marriage, it is interesting to note that some enterprising gentleman has begun the compilation of a book of American old families, giving the names of the survivors of the early aristocracy. aris-tocracy. With such a book foreign noblemen can look up the standing of their prospective brides, and can know if they are worthy of the great honor they would thrust upon them by taking them as wives. The book on American aristocracy is said to be of English origin, or at least that the promoters of the book are Englishmen. In its valuable pages will be given the names of all the members of the "old families" who will put up at least $7.50 as a subscription to the work. In addition to the names of tho present survivors, there will be an accompanying accom-panying "tree" the length of which no doubt will be gauged accurately by the size of the subscription subscrip-tion to the publication. The book will be a valuable commentary on the social life of America, and will no doubt be welcomed by a great many whose pride of family connections is about all there is about them worth being proud of. If they can afford a contribution of $7.50 or moro to have their lineage published, by all means, let them have it done. It will redound to the benefit of the promoters and the printers two very worthy beneficiaries indeed. |
