Show SHOULD NOT PURCHASE SUCH HATS. It is promised by the stylish headgear designers of ladies' hats that their productions will be on a much more elaborate scale next season than has been the case heretofore. It is the general opTmon that the American woman should protest against being be-ing made ridiculous in the eyes of the public by absolutely refusing to purchase such idiotic conceptions. concep-tions. The present enormous feminine hat. not to speak of the promised "experiment," is simply a nuisance. In the church it is impossible to see the altar (not to say priest), if one should be seated more than three or four pews from the altar railing, which is very annoying to all those who wish to assist as-sist at the Holy Sacrifice properly and with devout attention. Enormous feminine hats may be very appropriate appropri-ate for strolls in our commodious parks, or for exhibition ex-hibition purposes on our main thoroughfares, but. surely they are an imposition on the rights of others oth-ers in our churches. If hats fof women and wisses are again added to, why, we will bo 'obliged to make use of a diminutive traveling crane to place them on or remove them from our heads. Notwithstanding the assertion of American dealers in feminine headgear that the shapes of the enormous hat is imported from Paris, it is a fact that, while in the French metropolis- last spring and visiting many of the most fashionable millinery establishments. I failed to encounter any piece oi head finery which resembled the vast proportions of the millinery worn by American women on my arrival ar-rival home. Now. candidly, is it not time we. as sensible Americans, cry out against being made the victims of unscrupulous designers who, it would seem to many, have no other object in view than compelling those , of us who ought to have better sense to crowd our poor, aching heads with coil upon coil of false hair to make the unsightly hat the more snugly fit? Let us return to the days of refinement re-finement in dress and genuine attractiveness. Cat-olic Cat-olic Citizen. |
