Show NEW POLITICS. All the politicians, office holders and office seekers seek-ers seem to have adopted personal platforms against rebates, extortion, favoritism, boodling, corruption, scandal and everything which the people peo-ple are against, and for honest government and purity of politics and effective regulation of the trusts and public service corporations. And the people, with a lamentable lack of insight into the partisan political bugaboo will continue to elect some of them to office. It is a perverted vision with which the government is viewed by partisans and radicals of any political party. Honesty and ability "are not obsolete ideals among the people of the nation as qualifications for men in public places or anywhere else, and the lack of these things, as evidenced by disclosures of acute and widespread graft, has been the most potent cause for the grovth of those revolutionary theories which threaten the foundation of the republic and of all government. Governments exist for the sole benefit of the people, not of the politicians, and our civilization rests upon the stability of governments. When the people cannot derive the benefits which any government gov-ernment should afford, when the forces of iniquity control and justice and freedom are denied, that government is doomed. The United States government gov-ernment represents the progress of a thousand years of struggle against oppression and intoler ance of kings and princes and potentates. The struggle has been marked by bloodshed and war, yet today, with all the experience which history affords, our nation stands upon the brink of destruction de-struction for lack of common honesty in the lives of the people. Xo intelligent observer can view the rapidly-spreading rapidly-spreading radicalism which would overthrow all the accepted principles upon which government and civilization rest, without inquiring the reason. Yet the reason is apparent. It lie3 in the corruption of the representatives of the people, the selfish and mercenary interests of those who would squeeza out the last dollar from underlings, and the prevalence preva-lence of dishonesty.' Let us get back to first principles back to God. Unless we do there will be a terrible upheaval, and all our progress and civilized government will give ! way to the wreckers who will follow closely upon the heels of those who are today in control. It is indeed high time to demand purity in politics and ' public business, and to emphasize that demand by rcflecting that purity in our private lives. i : '-- ' ' m m m ' mjmnim nTnTTii...iiM.jiiL.iTi... m ,iii..jm ii1ilurf jH..J.,i' " " T " - ' |
